스테레오는 모노와는 달리 좌우의 Left 채널과 Right 채널을 사용하는 오디오 포맷이다.

좌, 우의 스피커의 지향각에 의해 가상의 팬텀 이미지가 생성되고, 이것을 스테레오 이미지라고 한다. 이 스테레오 이미지를 통하여 소리는 스테레오 이미지 공간 안에 입체적으로 배치 될 수 있게 된다. 즉 소리의 정위감을 생성하게 된다. 두 개의 독립적인 채널을 사용함으로써 우리 인간이 두 귀로 소리를 듣는 것처럼 다양한 방향에서 들리는 소리를 만들어 낼 수 있다. 사실 굳이 쿼드나 서라운드가 아니더라도 스테레오만으로도 평면 음장의 대부분이 구현이 가능하다.

Stereo is an audio format that differs from mono in that it uses the left and right channels. By the orientation of the left and right speakers, a virtual phantom image is created, which is referred to as a stereo image. Through this stereo image, sounds can be spatially arranged within the stereo image space, creating a sense of directionality in the sound. By utilizing two independent channels, we can generate sounds coming from various directions, much like how humans hear with two ears. In fact, it's possible to achieve most of the spatial soundstage using just stereo, without the need for quadraphonic or surround sound.

일반적인 스테레오 셋업은 Left 스피커와 Right 스피커로 이루어진다.

2.1 채널 셋업은 오디오 채널 자체는 Left 와 Right 의 2채널이지만, 스피커 셋업은 Left 스피커, Right 스피커와 서브우퍼 스피커 1개로 구성된다.

스테레오(Left, Right)의 시그널 소스는 인티앰프나 DSP 프로세서 또는 액티브 서브우퍼에 내장된 Bass Management를 통해서 저역대와 메인 스피커간의 크로스오버를 구성한 신호로 분리되어 서브우퍼와 메인 스피커로 분배된다.

2.1 채널 셋업을 사용하면 왼쪽 및 오른쪽 채널에 더 작은 북쉘프 스피커를 사용하고 더 낮은 주파수는 서브우퍼를 통해 재생하게 된다.
