신디사이저는 전자적으로 음악을 생성하는 장치나 소프트웨어입니다. 신디사이저는 다양한 음향을 생성하고 편집할 수 있는 다양한 오실레이터(파형 발생기), 필터, 엔벨로프 제어, 모듈레이션 및 효과 등의 기능을 제공합니다. 이러한 요소들을 통해 사용자는 다양한 음악적 표현과 사운드 디자인을 실현할 수 있으며, 전자 음악, 팝 음악, 영화 음악, 게임 음악 및 다른 음악 장르에서 널리 사용됩니다. 신디사이저는 일련의 키보드로 연주되거나 MIDI 컨트롤러와 연결하여 연주할 수 있으며, 다양한 음악 소프트웨어와 함께 사용되기도 합니다.

가산 방식을 전자회로로 구현하기엔 무리가 커서 주로 감산 합성 방식을 많이 사용하였다.

• 가산 합성 신디사이저 : 여러개의 톤휠을 통한 가산 합성 방식의 악기
• 감산 합성 신디사이저 : VCO 를 통한 감산 합성 방식의 악기

• 웨이브테이블 신디사이저 : 웨이브테이블 을 통한 감산 합성 방식의 악기, 비교적 많은 동시 발음 수 구현 가능
• FM 신디사이저 : FM 방식으로 무제한의 파형을 생성할 수 있는 FM 오퍼레이터를 통한 감산 합성 방식의 악기, 비교적 더 많은 동시 발음 수 구현 가능.
• 디지털 모델링 아날로그 신디사이저(버츄얼 아날로그 신디사이저) - 전통적인 신디사이저들을 디지털 모델링으로 재구현, 아주 많은 동시 발음 수 구현 가능.

• PCM 신디사이저 : PCM 방식으로 샘플링된 파형을 통한 감산 합성 방식의 악기
• PCM + 피지컬 모델링 신디사이저 : 현재의 대부분의 PCM 플래그쉽 신디사이저의 방식

It was impractical to implement additive synthesis electronically, so subtractive synthesis was mainly used.

• Additive synthesis synthesizer: An instrument using additive synthesis via multiple tone wheels.
• Subtractive synthesis synthesizer: An instrument using subtractive synthesis via VCO.

• 웨이브테이블 synthesizer: An instrument using subtractive synthesis via 웨이브테이블s, capable of relatively high polyphony.
• FM synthesizer: An instrument using FM synthesis to generate an unlimited number of waveforms, capable of relatively high polyphony.
• Digital modeling analog synthesizer: Traditional synthesizers re-implemented through digital modeling, capable of very high polyphony.

• PCM synthesizer: An instrument using PCM sampling to generate waveforms via subtractive synthesis.
• PCM + Physical modeling synthesizer: The current flagship synthesizers mostly use this method, combining PCM with physical modeling techniques.
