3:1 distance Rule
When using multiple microphones to capture multiple sources of audio, the 3:1 rule is applied to minimize phase issues.
Engineers have discovered that the most suitable solution to minimize comb filtering effects caused by phase interference between two microphones is to ensure that the original sound coming into one microphone and the sound bleeding into it from nearby microphones have at least a 10dB level difference.
Therefore, to prevent phase interference problems, to ensure that the sound from the source does not bleed significantly into other microphones, the distance between them should be at least three times greater.
Hence, in live settings or when miking each instrument of different performers, if the performers are positioned closely, you can set up the microphones closer to the instruments while still adhering to the 3:1 rule.
